Shamrock Division celebrates Founders Day

On a fine spring day, April 25, the Shamrock Division met to celebrate Founders Day. The day included admitting new members to our Order and to award scholarships to local young Irish scholars.

Established 35 years ago, the Shamrock Division has been celebrating Founders Day annually at St. Thomas Church in Jessenland, Minnesota. Jessenland, being the site of the oldest Irish settlement in Minnesota, gives a sense of history and struggle that befits the celebration of Founders Day.

The day was well attended by our local members and clergy.

The Scholarship Committee interviewed scholarship candidates and awarded $500 AOH Scholarships each to Cole Leary of Mapleton, Hunter Doheny of New Prague, Makenzie Klehr of Winthrop, Sydney Speer of Farmington and Joe Hankins of Belle Plaine. Scholarship selection was based on the applicant’s Irish heritage, education plans and how they plan to promote their Irish heritage in the future. A total of $2,500 was awarded in scholarships. Since 2008, the Shamrock division has awarded $14,000 in scholarships in our scholarship program.

Induction of new members through the Induction Ceremony was overseen by Chapter President Timothy Halloran. New members included: Richard Chilman of Le Sueur and Joe Murphy, Matt Skelly, Jeff Luskey and Dick Hayden all of Belle Plaine. Following the Induction Ceremony, Mass was celebrated by Fr. Berger to a large congregation at the St Thomas Church in Jessenland.
